Workers could have subsidised membership of sports facilities and adult education courses and access to cheap theatre, exhibition and concert tickets. Hundreds of theatre and cabaret groups toured the country visiting factories. Eventually 35 million members attended concerts, operas, theatre performances and exhibitions although some were of a poor standard or undersubscribed.

Families were encouraged to take advantage of subsidised holidays, and five huge holiday complexes were planned along the north coast. Only one at Prora, a mile-long complex for 20,000 holidaymakers on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen was started in 1936; work was abandoned when war broke out. Foreign holidays to the Alps, Italy, Portugal and Norway were also encouraged and the organisation owned eight cruise ships, including two new ones, and rented four others; 180,000 Germans enjoyed cruises in 1938 but many were party officials. The holiday schemes proved popular, and German tourism doubled under the Nazis while the state railway and the tourist industry saw profits rise. However, many tourist facilities were poor and block booking undercut established tour companies. Hordes of working-class holidaymakers in rural areas often caused problems.
